Color Update on the Stepan Story

I've been coloring the pages out of order, skipping over a few that I thought would present problems, and I just finished my fifth one -- which is p. 7. I think that means I'm halfway through with the work, or at least nearly there.

The page I just finished, as you may recall, is the one that swipes its layout, more or less, from Duchamp's Nude Descending a Staircase. I thought I'd try doing that page with a flat version of Duchamp's palette, leaving some of the painting visible in parts of the background.

What do you think?

  1. Wow! Beautiful work.. and I love the subdued color palate.

  2. Thanks, Ben! It was really fun to color this one -- I almost felt like an old-school animator, "painting" fields of color in between the linework and the background (which was the Duchamp). I found myself thinking, "Why aren't our characters always standing in front of famous works of art?"

  3. Looks great Isaac. Before I even read the text I thought "Nude Descending a Staircase".

  4. You know, I loved this page in black and white, but this is even better, for sure. I second Ben's applause for the muted palette this time around.

And did I mention that I recently got to see Duchamp's original at an exhibit at the Tate Modern, along with various works by or featuring R. Selavy? It's nice to see this page stand up on behalf of Dada.

  5. Well, we only have Motley to thank for that factor. I don't think it ever would have occurred to me to swipe the Nude if Motley hadn't insisted on multiple references to Duchamp on that page.

I'm glad to see that it's going over well. I've only got four pages to go! As the monkey said when his tail was run over by the lawnmower, it won't be long now.
